In the year 1879, a number of Christians gathered in the Green Meadow Schoolhouse and organized the Green Meadow Christian Church. This was the gathering from which Lone Oak Christian Church was born. The congregation continued to meet at that schoolhouse until it was destroyed in a fire, which led to the construction of a new building at Lone Oak's current location. Local tradition holds that the gathering took place in that new space, even as construction was ongoing. This new building was dedicated in the year 1896.Â
At some time in the 1910s, the church became known as Lone Oak Christian Church, and came to function, in addition to a worship space, as a community center of sorts, supporting the nearby area which did not have many churches at the time. Through the subsequent years, many seasons of growth and change have seen multiple building additions, many faithful leaders, a strong congregation, and countless lives changed, all in the name of Jesus Christ.
Today, Lone Oak Christian Church seeks to be a place where God's goodness and grace are revealed to all who meet with us. The church takes seriously the call in the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations, and, in recent years, has developed a reputation as a church with a heart especially for overseas missions, and supports a number of missionaries, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa. Many of these folks have or currently do worship with us, and their stories of transformed lives are a blessing to those who gather here.
We look forward to continuing to bear witness to the work of the Spirit here in Johnson City, and would love to have you join us here at Lone Oak Christian Church, "a place where no one stands alone!"
